A control system for swimming-pool-type reactors is designed which allows rapid shutdown as well as compensations for large, slow and small, and rapid variations of reactivity. The system comprises a carriage for supporting a control rod and movable inside a guide tube with flexible walls, a movable member having rollers for engaging the carriage from outside the tube, and means for driving the movable member. For normal operation, electromagnets are energized to couple the movable member with the carriage, and for shutdown, the electromagnets are de-energized to allow the control rod to fall into the reactor core.
