SEALING DEVICE FOR MECHANICAL CONTROL
A mechanical system ensuring fluld tlght displacement of a reactor control rod consists of a fluid tight vertical cylindrical elastic wall in which in axial dlrection slides a carriage supporting the control rod. The wheels of the carriage touch the inner surface of the wall. Outside the wall a control element is provided movable in the vertical direction and supporting rollers enforcing a local elastlc deformation of the cylindrical wall at two opposite points, so that the rollers engage, by the deformed wall, two wheels of the inner carriage. In this way the inner carriage and control rod follow the movement of the outer control element. Means are provlded for bringing together and spreading the rollers for performing the engagement and nonengagement of the rollers with the inner carriage, so that at non-engagement the inner carriage freely moves down by the action of gravity to shut down the reactor.
