>A gas discharge apparatus is designed for research on the production of controlled thermonuclear reactions. The apparatus comprises a toroidal vessel for containing a gas and with an insulated joint transverse to its axis, a pulse transformer coupled to the vessel for establishing a pinched and pulsed ring discharge in the gas, and a toroidal winding on the outside of the vessel for setting up a magnetic field in the vessel parallel to the discharge.
