A gas discharge apparatus is described for research in the production of controlled thermonuclear reactions. The apparatus comprises a metal torus with two circumferential insulating gaps and a liner for shielding the gaps from the discharge, and means for establishing a ring discharge within the torus. The liner is electrically continuous around its large circumference and has a resistance around the same circumference which is large compared with the discharge resistance. The liner preferably consists of corrugated stainless steel. The cooling arrangements of the torus are described. (D.L.C.)
