PERMEABILITY OF THE MAMMARY GLAND TO SODIUM-24, POTASSIUM-42, CHLORINE-36 AND IODINE-131
The permeability of the mammary gland to Na/sup 24/, K/sup 42/ Cl/sup 36/ , and I/sup 131/ was studied in goats in the first half of lactation. Polyethylene glycol, which does not penetrate the udder epithelium, was used as a reference substance. The injected radioactive solutes were rapidly and fairly evenly distributed throughout the whole milk volume of the injected udder. Data are tabulated on milk concentration at various times after injection. The roles of diffusion and active transport in permeability of the udder are discussed briefly. (C.H.)
