EFFECT OF LOW LEVEL X-IRRADIATION ON THE FERTILIZED EGG OF THE MAMMAL

Pregnant mice were exposed to x rays so that 5 r were absorbed by the embryos 0.5 days after conception. Entire oviducts and uteri were searched at 6 and at 24 hr for very early embryos. Even at this low level of exposure the first cleavage was delayed and there was an increase from 2.5% in the controls to 20% in the number of abnormals, among the irradiated. The anomalies included cytoplasmic damage appearing as a wave of necrosis over the egg, hyperchromaticity of both cytoplasm and nucleus, exudation of cytoplasm through ruptured cell membranes, pyknosis of nuclei and congealing (sticky) chromosomes, and complete dissolution of blastomers with only the polar body remaining. These anomalies are rarely, if ever, found in the controls. On the basis of this and other recent studies it is believed that the newly fertilized egg is probably the most radiosensitive cell in the mouse, except possibly the germ cells. (auth)
