LATE MANIFESTATIONS OF WHOLE AND PARTIAL BODY IONIZING RADIATION IN THE DOG: A TWO YEAR SUMMARY

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4820845
Beagles of known age, bilaterally exposed to 1000 kvp x rays on the whole or upper part of the body, were continually observed for a period of two years after exposure. Among animals exposed to 260 r MAD (LD 15/30) wholebody total WBC returned to 60-70% of pre-exposure levels two months after irradiation and remained at this level over the two year period. In the 280-340 r MAD (LD 40/ 30-LD 70/30) whole-body group, the total white blood count re turned to 70-80% of normal four months after exposure and plateaued at this level up to two years. Body weight in whole-body exposed dogs increased in comparison with the controls. One death occurred 19 months after exposure in the 340 r whole-body group. In upper body exposed animals (1820 r (LD 10/30) or lower), white blood counts returned to 95% of initial during the third post exposure month and ranged between 80-100% during the two year period. Some upper body exposcd animals (970- 2125 r MAD) developed pulmonary fibrosis associated with cardiovascular damage and arteriosclerotic changes during this period. Subsequent to this, evidence of thyroid insufficiency was found in some of the upper body irradiated animals. Cataracts developed in upper body irradiated dogs within 1 year after exposure. Deaths occurred in the 2125 r (LD 50/30) upper body group 12 and 18 months after exposure. (auth) STIMULATION OF THE MAMMALIAN NERVOUS SYSTEM
