Phase Equilibria in Fused Salt Systems: Binary Systems of Plutonium(III) Chloride with the Chlorides of Magnesium, Calcium, Strontium, and Barium

Thermal and differential thermal analysis techniques, supplemented by microscopic examination of cooled melts, were used to investigate phase equilibrium diagrams for the binary systems: PuCl/sub 3/-MgCl/sub 2/, Pu/Cl/sub 3/ -CaCl/sub 2/, PuCl/sub 3/SrCl/sub 2/, PuCl/sub 3/-BaCl/sub 2/. The PuCl/sub 3/- MgCl/sub 2/ and PuCl/sub 3/-CaCl/sub 2/ systems are characterized by single eutectic points: the PuCl/sub 3/-SrCl/sub 2/ and PuCl/sub 3/-BaCl/sub 2/ systems are characterized by peritectic transformations and solid solutions. Compounds of the tyne M/sub 3/PuCl/sub 9/ (M = Sr or Ba) are associated with the peritectic transformation and solid solutions occur in compositions which are rich in SrCl/ sub 2/ or BaCl/sub 2/.
