EQUILIBRIA BETWEEN TITANIUM METAL AND SOLUTIONS OF TITANIUM DICHLORIDE IN FUSED MAGNESIUM CHLORIDE
A method has been developed for collecting vapors over solid TiCl/sub 2/ or over mixtures of TiCl/sub 2/ and MgCl/sub 2/ in a specially designed titanium pipette at elevated temperatures. The reaction of titanium tetra- and trichioride with Ti metal could not be prevented on cooling, but the analytical total content of chlorine could be used to determine the apparent total concentration of titanium in the vapor phase. The study indicated strong positive deviations from Raoult's Law for liquid MgCl/sub 2/--TiCl/sub 2/ solutions and limted solubility of TiCl/sub 2/ in liquid MgCl/sub 2/ in the range from 720 deg to 800 deg C. This was confirmed by thermal analyses of mixtures. The system MgCl/sub 2/--TiCl/sub 2/ is of the peritectic type. The peritectic point lies at about 0.3 wt.% TiCl/sub 2/ and at 716 deg C. The melting point of TiCl/sub 2/ is 1025 deg C. Salt mixtures In equilibrium with Ti metal contain only TiCl/sub 2/, and no measurable quantities of TiCl/sub 4/ or TiCl/sub 3/. (auth)
