LUMINESCENCE STUDIES IN EARLY RADIATION INJURIES OF CELLS (in Russian)

Vital and supravital methods of luminescence microscopy render it possible to reveal in hemopoietic organs almost immediately after irradiation marked physico-chemical and structural injuries of the nuclei of individual celIs, the number of such injured cells increasing within a few hours after irradiation. Conventional histological methods cannot reveal such early disturbances. In lymphocytes and lymphoid organs (lymphatic nodes, thymus) early nuclear disorders are of the same character as that previously described in the nuclei of bone marrow cells of irradiated animals. Radiation-injured cells of lymphoid organs are arranged in individual foci, their aggrevation resembIing micronecrotic foci in the bone marrow. Early nuclear lesions of cells in lymphoid organs are caused by direct action of radiation. Screening eliminates this reaction. Stratification of nuclear nucleoprotein into two fractions with a different luminescence apparently reflects the separation of DNA from protein. Early nuclear injuries are revealed also in the epithelium of the small intestine of irradiated animals. Luminescence-microscopic methods both in the visibIe and uItraviolet range of the spectrum are already used with success in radiobiological experiments. They are also very promising for the study of the nature of biological action of radiation. (auth)
