MICRONECROTIC FOCI IN THE SPLEEN OF IRRADIATED ANIMALS (in Russian)

Intravitam and supravitam luminescent-microscopic studies of spleen preparation from irradiated animals distinctly demonstrate both early and late injuries of the cells of this organ. These injuries, at first very delicate and then more drastic, are to be detected both in individual cells and in groups of closely adjacent cells forming characteristic foci. The major component of these foci are lymphocytes. The number of micronecrotic foci in the spleen increases with increase in the radiation dose, and at a 500 r dose it reaches the maximum on the 12th hour following irradiation. Injured lymphoid cells, their decomposition products, and micronecrotic foci exhibit increased luminescence in the ultraviolet range of the spectrum. Since a similar effect has been recorded in myeloid cells of bone-marrow it appears highly probable that the increase in ultraviolet luminescence depends on biochemical changes of the irradiated cells.
