A method and an apparatus are described for forming integral external fins on metal bar or tube stock by outward extrusion. In this method, one or a pair of rapidly vibrating former tools with open-ended grooves is pressed into the side of the workpiece, and the workpiece is advanced along its length to form the fin progressively in the groove. The workpiece is heated to a temperature sufficient to plasticize the material prior to fin formation. (D.L.C.)
