MEASUREMENTS WITH A DOUBLE PROPORTIONAL COUNTER ON NUCLIDES DECAYING BY ELECTRON CAPTURE

Weak interactions between nucleons and leptons in atomic nuclei are responsible for beta decay. Fundamental processes are discussed. Correlation effects and electron capture ratios for allowed and non-allowed transitions are examined. Comparisons of positron emission and Kelectron capture are made, and rearrangement of the atomic cloud is discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of the beta spectrometer, the scintillation spectrometer, and the proportional counter are considered. Precision measurements on L/K capture ratios are performed for Ar/sup 37/, Fe/sup 55/, Ge/sup 71/, Kr/sup 79/, and I/sup 126/, and results are compared with theoretical calculations. Deviations are found. lmprovements of K-fluorescence yield accuracies may be obtained from direct measurements using a proportional detector and determining separately the contributions of x-rays and Auger electrons. Design and eonstruction of the apparatus are discussed. Measurements of K-capture fractions for Zn/sup 65/, Mn/ sup 54/, and Co/ sup 57/ were made using the double proportional counter. Determinations of the K/ BETA /sup +/ ratio in Co/sup 58/ decay and of the K- fluorescence yields for Mn/sup 54/, Fe/sup 55/, Zn/sup 65/, and Ge/sup 71/ were made, and satisfactory values were obtained.
