LEVELS IN Gd$sup 156$ FED IN THE /cap beta/-DECAY OF Eu$sup 15$$sup 6$

Journal Article · · Nuclear Phys.
S>The disintegration scheme of- Eu/sup 156/ was studied using the Chalk River high-resolution beta spectrometer, scintillation spectrometers and coincldence techniques. The internal conversion electron spectrum was studied at momentum resolution settings in the range 0.02 to 0.08%. Conversion lines were observed correspondlng to 28 beta -transitions in Gd /sup 156/ of energies ln kev: 88.97 (E2), l99.l9 (E2), 599.5 (El), 646.3 (El), 709.9, 723.5, 8ll.8 (Ml), 865.8, 867.l (El), 960.8 (El), l040.5, 1049.5, 1065.l (E2), l079.2, l153.4 (El), 1154.0 (E2), 1l68.5, 1230.7 (El), l242.4 (El), 1277.4, l366.4 (El), l876.8 (Ml, E2), 1937.5 (Ml, E2), l965.8 (Ml, E2), 2026.4 (Ml, E2), 2097.8 (Ml, E2), 2l8l.0 (Ml, E2) and 2186.8 (Ml, E2). The multipolarity assignments for the two lowest energy transitions were deduced from the L subshell conversion line intensity ratios; the others are based on the K-conversion coefficients deduced in this work. The beta spectrum of Eu/sup 156/ has at least four components of energies 2430 plus or minus l0 (33%), 1195 plus or minus l5 (l4%), 485 plus or minus 20 kev (36%) and a low energy component of <350 kev ( approximately l7%). A beta - gamma coincidence experiment shows that the 2430-kev component feeds the ground state of Gd/sup 156/. Considerations of gamma energy sums and gamma - gamma coincidence experiments establish levels in Gd/sup 156/ at energies in kev of 0(0+), 88.97 (2+), 288.l6 (4+), ll54.0 (2+) l242.4 (l-), 13l9.7, (2-), l366.4 (l-), l965.8 (l,2+), 2026.4 (l,2+), 2l8l.0 (l,2+) 2l86.8 (l,2+) and 2203.4 (0,l,2+). Most of the low spln - levels in Gd/sup 156/ fed in the beta -decay of Eu (0) were not observed in the electron capture decay of Tb/sup 156/(3 4-). (auth)
