INTERNAL CONVERSION COEFFICIENTS OF THE 2$sup +$-0$sup +$, E2 TRANSITIONS IN EVEN-EVEN Sm$sub 90$$sup 152$ AND Gd$sub 8$$sub 8$$sup 15$$sup 2$
To investigate the deviation of the internal conversion coefficients of E2 transitions from theoretical computations and their dependence on nuclear deformation, the total internal conversion coefficient of the 121.8-kev 2/sup +/0/ sup +/ transition in ellipsoidal Sm/sup 152/ was measured to be 1.135 plus or minus 0.010 with a high accuracy coincidence-sum method. The K-shell to total internal conversion ratio was determined to be 0.588 plus or minus 0.003 with a BETA spectrometer. The K-, L- and M-shell internal conversion coefftcients were deduced as: alpha K = 0.667 plus or minus 0.008, alpha L1 = 0.070 plus or minus 0.003, alpha L2 = 0.155- plus or minus 0.005, alpha L3 = 0.151 plus or minus 0.008, alpha M1 = 0.011 plus or minus 0.001, alpha M2 = 0.037 plus or minus 0.003, and alpha M3 = 0.036 plus or minus 0.005. The alpha K of the 344-kev 2/sup +/1--0/sup +/ transition in near spherical Gd/sup 152/ was determined to be (2.84 plus or minus 0.07) x 10/sup -2/ by BETA -conversion electron coincidence method using two BETA spectrometers end to end. The experiment revealed no deviation from theory nor indications of strong dependence on nuclear deformation; it therefore did not confirm recent beliefs in this regard. The details of the coincidence-sum method were described. The K electron to total electron capture ratio from Eu/sup 152/ to the 1.53 Mev state in Sm/sup 152/ was also measured to be 0.79 plus or minus 0.02. (auth)
