THE ENERGY LEVELS OF Gd$sup 156$ AND Gd$sup 15$$sup 8$ (in Russian)

>The gamma -ray spectra and internal conversion electron spectra were determined for Gd/sup 156/ and Gd/sup 158/ which were obtained by (n gamma ) reactions on enriched targets of Gd/sup 155/ and Gd/sup 157/. From the gamma - ray spectrum, the binding energy of the neutron was found to be 7937 plus or minus 5 kev in Gd/sup 158/, and 853l plus or minus 5 kev in Gd/sup 156/. The 6960- and 6911-kev gamma -transitions go to the well-populated 978 and 1025 kev levels which have characteristics of l/sup -/ and 2/sup -/ respectively in Gd/sup 158/. The existence of a l044-kev level with a characteristic of 3/sup -3/ in Gd/ sup 158/ is also proposed on the basis of the difference in energies of two intense E1 transitions with energies of 964 and 778 kev. The presence of levels with a negative parity in Gd/sup 158/ at an excitation energy of about l Mev is probably associated with the break-up of a pair of nucleons with the transformation of one nucleon into another state. Levels with a negative parity were observed in Gd/sup 156/ at 1273 and 1316 kev. A comparison of the gamma - ray spectra and internal electron conversion spectra in the 900- to 1200-kev energy interval for Gd/sup 156/ shows that in the case of the l011and 1041-kev transitions, the conversion coefficients are NCE ABSTRACTS Vol- 10 No- OA greater than in the 960-, 1065-, and 1159-kev E2-transitions. It is assumed that the 10l1-kev line corresponds to a 0/sup +/-- 0/sup +/ transition, while the 1041- kev line corresponds to a 2/sup +/ transition (l130 kev) -- 2/sup +/ (89 kev). the 1427-kev transition in Gd/sup 158/, which also has a very large conversion coefficient, is assumed to correspond to a 0/sup +/ -- 0/sup +/ transition.
