THE EFFECTS OF IRRADIATION ON THE DIELECTRIC AND OTHER PROPERTIES OF POLYETHYLENE

Polyethylene samples prepared by high pressure and low pressure methods were gamma -irradiated by a Co/sup 60/ source. Increasing dosage produced an increasing weight change. The weight increment was indirectly proportional to the thickness of the specimen for a constant dosage. With increas-. ing dosage, the tangential increment of the dielectric loss angle increased significantly, while the increment of the dielectric constant decreased. Infrared analysis showed that gamma irradiation promoted oxidation, and surface oxidation was prevalent. The variation of the dielectric characteristics by gamma irradiation was less with the low pressure method polyethylene than with the high pressure method polyethylene. (OID)
