S>Samples of polar high polymers with the C-Cl radical as PVC, neoprene gum, and polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene were irradiated by a 3000-c Co/sup 60/ gamma -ray source or by fast neutrons. The results obtained were different from those obtained with nonpolar high polymers, such as polyethylene. In the case of PVC, the dielectric constant and the loss tangent for nonplasticized samples increased rapidly at a certain dosage but varied little with an increase in the stabilizer, Tribase, content. The dielectric characteristics of neoprene gum varied because of the irradiation breakage of the C-Cl bond. Polymonochlorotrifluoroethylene became brittle at lower radiation dosages and showed considerable changes in the mechanical properties but few changes in the dielectric properties. The effects of irradiation on the dielectric characteristics, even with the same polar C-Cl radical in the molecules, differed depending upon the molecular structure. (OID)
