Several SH compounds and their corresponding SH free control compounds were investigated for their radiation protection effect using alteration of permeability of the erythrocytes membrane (swelling and potassium-sodium exchange) and the hemolysis caused by x rays. The SH group is of decisive importance for the protection effectiveness of the lnvestigated SH compounds (cysteine, homocysteine, cysteinamine, glutathione, sodium thioglycholate, and monothioglycerine). The contemporary presence of the NH/sub 2/ group in the molecule has no special influence on the protection effect of these substances. The investigated SH compounds show, in higher concentratlons (3 x 10/sup -2/ mol), a hemolyzing effect with varying strength for each compound. This effect ls greater in the x-ray irradlated erythrocytes than in the unirradlated ones. The hemolyzing effect of SH compounds can cover or sometimes completely annul the radiation protectlon effect. The protection effect against x-ray hemolysls is caused by the reduction abillty of the SH compounds. They attract oxidlzing radicals, which are produced by the irradiation, from the erythrocyte membrane by means of their greater oxidation tendency. The effect found with x-ray hemolysis does not agree, in all cases, with the effect in the whole animal as reported in the literature. Therefore, it is assumed, that, under the conditions of the whole animal experiment, still other factors besides the radical capture are lmportant for the protectlon effect. (auth)
