LITHIUM AND LITHIUM-6 ANALYSIS BY COUNTING DELAYED NEUTRONS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4816748
The neutron precursor N/sup 17/ is produced by the successive nuclear reactions Li/sup 6/(n, alpha )t and O/sup 18/(t, alpha )N/sup 17/ by irradi ating aqueous solutions of Li salts with termal neutrons. The delayed neutrons of N/ sup 17/ are used for the assay of Li. The total neutron emission is directly proportional to the Li/sup 6/ content. An emission of about 40,000 neutrons is obtained from a solution containing 1 mg Li/supl 6/ irradiated to saturation at a flux of 10/supl 13/ n/cm/sup 2/-sec. By using solutions of O/sup 16/enriched water, a corresponding increase in the neutron count and the sensitivity of the analysis are obtained. Interference by possible neutron-producing and neutronabsorbing, as well as other impurities is discussed. (auth)
