Neutron counting of 4.14-sec N/sup 17/ was used for the analysis of O/ sup 18/ in solutions containing known amounts of Li/sup 6/. Nitrogen-17 is produced by the successive nuclear reactions Li/sup 6/(n, alpha )t; O/sup 18/(t, alpha )N/sup 17/ on irradiation with thermal n eutrons. The total delayed neutron emission of a sample irradiated to saturation at a thermal neutron flux of 10/sup 13/ n/cm/sup 2/-second is about 4 x 10/sup 5/ neutrons per mg of Li/sup 6/ per atom per cent O/sup 18/. The N/sup 17/ formation is proportional to the atom fraction of O/sup 18/ and is independent of the sample size. (auth)
