A control system for gas-cooled graphite-moderated reactors is designed with means for driving the control rods to shutdown position and for holding them in shutdown position irrespective of subsequent failure of driving means or of reactor position. Each control rod is provided with a fluid pressure-actuated power device for driving the rod to its shutdown position and with locking means for holding the rod against the force of gravity in the shutdown position. The system is especially advantageous for mobile reactors, e.g., on ships. (D.L.C.)
