Investigation of the high energy mu -meson spectra which is expected to throw light on the origin of mu -mesons and the high-energy pi -mesons generated in nuclear interactions, is complicated by the limitations of the magnetic spectrometers. It was therefore attempted to study these spectra in an underground location, using an instrument which allows the simultaneous measurement of mu -mesons with energies in the broad range of l0/sup 10/ to 10/ sup 13/ ev. The device contained 2 sets of ionization chambers placed at a depth of 40-m of water equivalent, recording the meson spectrum in the form of ionization impacts caused by the high-energy mu -mesons. The chambers were shielded with a 16-cm thick Pb layer; an array of 48 Geiger-Mulller counters were placed under the chambers. Threshold ionization events corresponding to 80 and 400 particles were determined. It was found that the energy spectrum of mu - mesons in the l0/sup 11/ to 10/sup 13/ ev range has a gradual character with an indicator of gamma = -1.9 plus or minus 0.2. In the range of 10/sup 11/ ev the spectrum has a steeper slope, possibly because of energy losses. In the l0/ sup 11/ to 10/sup 12/ ev range the spectrum obtained agrees with those yielded by a magnetic spectrometer and beyond 10/sup 12/ ev, with those derived from the angular distribution of mu -mesons by P. Barrett and L. Bollinger (Rev. Modern Phys., 24: 133(1952)). (TTT)
