THE COEFFICIENT OF INELASTICITY IN VERY HIGH ENERGY NUCLEAR COLLISIONS (in Polish)

Journal Article · · Postepy Fizyki

In a nucleon-nucleon or nucleon-nucleus collision, the coefficient of inelasticity K is defined as that fraction of the total kinetic energy in the center-of-mass system, before collision, that is imparted to newly formed particles. The value of K depends on the spatial distribution of energy around the core of the nucleon, and similarly on the relative strengths of irteraction of the incident nucleon with the core of another nucleon and with the mesonic field. The relationship of K and the attenuation length in bulk matter is treated. The measuring techniques discussed include the attenuation length, nuclear emulsion techniques in measuring K, the combination of Wilson cloud chamber and ionization calorimeter, and the nuclear emulsion chamber (alternate layers of high Z material and nuclear emulsions). A review of experimental work includes the variation of the total-K and the pi-mesonic component of K, K(pi), with the mass of the target nucleus and with the energy of the incident particle. In the energy ranges discussed, from less than 10/sup 11/ ev to l0/sup 13/ ev, K(pi) varies non-monotonically from 0.1 to about 1.0. (TTT)
