The coefficient of inelasticity K or the portion of the energy of a primary particle which is transferable in nucleonnucleon collisions to secondary particles, is one of the most important characteristics of high-energy interactions but this dependence cannot be determined from available experimental data in the range beyond l0/sup 11/ ev. This problem was studied in the l0/sup 11/ to l0/sup 12/-ev range by means of Cherenkov counters, estimating the energy of the primary particles by a calorimetric method. The Cherenkov counters used consisted of vessels containing water, glycerine or gasoline and a second Plexiglas container with MgO. The energy transferred by the pi /sup 0/-mesons was estimated from the number of relativistic particles in the electron-photon showers under a Pb layer while the coefficient of inelasticity was determined as the ratio of the pi /sup 0/-mesons formed during the first portion of the nuclear interaction to the total energy of the primary particles. During the 850 hours of the test the device recorded 550 showers with energies higher than 50 Bev. The distribution curve K/sub pi /sup 0/ showed that transfer of more than 50% of the primary energy by neutral n mesons is very rare, less than 3%. The average value of the coefficient in the region beyond l0/sup 11/ ev was (17 plus or minus 1.5%). (TTT)
