The total ionization cross sections ( sigma -) for single collisions between fast Ne/sup n+/ and Xe atoms and between fast Xe/sup n+/ and Ne atoms were measured. The fast particles possessed charges from 0 to 4 and were accelerated by a potential which varied between 3 to 30 kv. With increased fast particle charge the cross section was found to increase for the Ne/sup n+/ and Xe pair and to decrease for the Xe/sup n+/ -Ne pair. An analysis of elementary processes in which electrons are liberated from the shells of each of the colliding panticles indicates that a dependence of this type could be expected. An increase of sigma - with increased fast particle charge is due to the possibility of exothermal ionization processes involving capture. An opposite type of dependence occurs when ionization with capture is an endothermal process and the main contribution to the cross section is from fast atomic particle stripping. (auth)
