USE OF RESONANCE ABSORBERS FOR MEASURING NEUTRON SPECTRA IN FAST REACTORS (in Russian)

Use of thin foils with strong resonance activation cross section makes it possible to determine neutron fluxes having energies corresponding to the resonance maxima. While this method may be used for determining the relatively soft spectra in the reflectors of fast reactors, the strongest resonance may become comparable to others lying at much lower or higher energy levels and therefore the activity induced by neutrons corresponding to the resonance energy must be determined by special methods. This resonance blocking" method was used for determining the resonance flux distribution of 4.9-ev and 2.95-kev neutrons, using Au/sup 197/ and and Na/sup 23, in the reflectors of the BR-l and BR-5 reactors, The method, designated as deduction of the l/ nu contributioni" was carried out by means of absorbers containing 100 mg/cm/sup 2/ of Na/sup 2/CO/sup 3/ using a small boron boron chamber the 1/ nu detector, The contribution of the resonance neutrons ranged from 20 to 50%, depending on the position of the absorbers in the reactor. The gold foils used contained 3.05 and 6.10 mg/cm/sup 2/ of Au/sup 197/. (TTT)
