An ionization chamber which may be small in size, e.g., for personnel monitoring, is described wherein the wall of the chamber is made of vitreous boric oxide. Copper lead-in conductors extend through the wall and are coated with a soft vitreous enamel which forms an intermediate layer between the conductor surface and the wall material. The wall is coated with a layer of a polyester or celluloid impermeable to moisture. (D.L.C.)
