An ionization chamber for measuring gamma and x rays is described whose wall is airtight, has very high insulation resistance, can be heated for degassing, and has a radiation absorption similar to air. The wall is made out of vitreous boric oxide and then coated with polyester or celluloid to protect the boric oxide from moisture. The ionization chamber is suitable for use as personnel monitors.
