OBSERVATIONS ON THE RARE EARTHS. LXXIII. THE HEAT AND ENTROPY OF FORMATION OF THE 1:1 CHELATES OF N-HYDROXYETHYLETHYL-ENEDIAMINETRIACETIC ACID WITH THE TRIPOSITIVE CATIONS
Enthalpy changes in the formation of N- hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid (H/sub 3/HEDTA) chelates of the tripositive rare-earth metal ions are evaluated by the temperature coefficient method for aqueous solutions of ionic strength 0.l(KNO/sub 3/). Corresponding entropy changes are calculated from the enthalpy changes and stability constants at 25 deg . Values of enthalpy and entropy changes for the formation of Ca(HEDTA)/sup -/, Cu(HEDTA)/sup -/, and Cu(tren)/sup 2+/ are obtained also. An interpretation of data for the rareeanth metal chelates is offered and extended to other published data. Consideration of both translational and configurational entropy changes is shown to be neecessary, and the importance of the latter in these complexes is emphasized. (auth)
