Enthalpy changes in the formation of 1: 1 and 1:2 nitrilotriacetic acid (H/sub 3/NTA) chelates of the tripositive rare earth metal ions were evaluated by the temperature coefficient method for aqueous solutions of ionic strength 0.l0 (KNO/sub 3/). Corresponding entropy changes were calculated from the enthalpy changes and stability constants at 25 deg . Values of enthalpy and entropy changes for the formation of Ca(NTA)- and Cu(NTA)- were obtained also. The importance of the configurational entropy in accounting for trends in the stabilities of the rare earth metal chelates again is apparent. (auth)
