OBSERVATIONS ON THE RARE EARTHS. LXXV. THE STABILITIES OF DIETHYLENETRIAMINE-PENTAACETIC ACID CHELATES
The interaction between diethylenetriaininepentaacetic acid (H/sub 5/ DTPA or H/sub 5/Z) and rare-earth metal ions (Ln/sup 3+/ was investigated. The acid formation constarts of the hydrogen chelates (LnHZ/sup -/) and the formation constants of the normal chelates (LnZ/sup 2-/) were obtained at 10, 20, and 30 deg C, and an ionic strength of 0.1(KNO/sub 3/), the former by a titration technique and the latter by a mercury indicator electrode technique. The data were treated by a least-squares method for evaluation of DELTA H/sup 0/ and DELTA S/sup 0/. Although errors in the functions were substantial, the functions were related to observed trends in stability. The dissociation constants for the last three protons of dietliylenetriaminepertaacetic acid were measured as a function of temperature at ionic strength 0.1(KNO/sub 3/) and converted to thermodynamic functions by least squares analysis. The functions were compared with corresponding values for related chelating agents. (auth)
