A method is given for preparing carbides of uranium, thorium, and/or plutonium with a reduced surface chemical activity and readily comminuted to the proper size for reactor fuel use. The method comprises forming the silicide of the metal, comminuting the silicide to the desired degree, and carburizing the silicide to produce an intimate mixture of the carbide of the metal and carbon silicide.
