A novel fissionable-fuel bearing powder composition may be prepared which is non-reactive with aluminum during fabrication into compact fuel elements and subsequent use in reactors. The composition comprises a mixture of aluminum and uranium carbide, the carbide portion containing at least 80 wt.% UC/sub 2/ and being preferably prepared by fusing a uranium--carbon mixture. Reactivity data are presented for mixtures containing various proportions of UC/sub 2/ and UC and Al fired at 620 deg C for times up to 96 hr. A fabrication method is outlined for producing sandwich-type aluminum-clad fuel plates from such mixtures for use in MTR-type reactors. (D.L.C.)
