A method is given for preparing U or Th carbides in granular form for reactor use. The method comprises preparing a finely divided mixture of the corresponding oxide with at least the stoichiometric amount of carbon, forming the mixture into granules of the desired size, and heating the granules to convert the oxide to carbide. The conversion of UO/sub 2/ into U carbide granules is described The method is particularly applicable to the production of granules of intimately mixed U and Th carbides. (D.L.C.)
