INFLUENCE OF X-RAY THERAPY UPON THE THROMBOPOIETIC SYSTEM

Twenty-two patients treated by fractionated superficial irradiation of small doses, from 30 to 50 r for lymphadenitis tuberculosa and peritonitis tuberculosa, and 46 patients treated by high daily deep irradiation doses of 200- 250 r for malignant tumors were studied. In the high dosage group, an increase of the platelet count was occasionally observed at the beginning of the irradiation. None of the cases showed a decrease in the megakaryocyte count, but a marked increase was frequently observed. In the group treated by small dosage fractionated irradiation, a slight decrease in thrombopoiesis was revealed even when the total dosage was 1000 r. In the group treated by deep irradiation, however, no decrease was revealed in thrombopoiesis even after a total dosage of l000-2000 r. It is concluded that the thrombopoietic sensitivity of the megakaryocytes may be affected by deep x-ray therapy. (Abstr. Japan Med., 1: No. 15, 1961)
