HAEMATOLOGICAL INVESTIGATION OF ACUTE AND CHRONIC RADIATION LESIONS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE THROMBOPOIETIC SYSTEM. I. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY
Hematological observation following a single dose wholebody radiation with an x-ray dose of 30 to 2000 r was made on female rabbits. When a dose of 200 to 500 r was administered, the platelet count increased temporarily and then decreased. With a dose of 1000 to 2000 r the platelets decreased considerably. Parallel with the platelet count decrease there was an increase in the dimensions of the platelets and in the number of damaged platelets. The megakaryocyte count of the bone marrow decreased when over 200 r was given. Although the lymphocytes decreased in number after irradiation with only 30 r, the peripheral RBC and the Hb remained unchanged even after irradiation with l000 r. (Abstr.
