INHIBITION OF DEOXYRIBONUCLEIC ACID BREAKDOWN IN X-IRRADIATED ESCHERICHIA COLI BY VARIOUS COMPOUNDS

Journal Article · · Biochim. et Biophys. Acta
Results are reported from a series of experiments on the effect of various compounds on the x-ray-induced breakdown of desoxyribonucleic acid in Escherichla coll. Citrate, succinate, glutamate, and adenosine triphosphate were found to inhibit the breakdown of DNA completely. Monophosphorylated derivatives of adenosine were also effective, but adenosine diphosphate was significantly less effective. In irradiated cells, incubated in acetate buffer alone, or in pyrophosphate or Mg//sup 2+/-containing buffer, the breakdown of desoxyribonucleic acid was very extensive. Possible reaction mechanisms are discussed. (C.H.)
