AN ELECTRON-MICROSCOPIC STUDY ON THE EFFECT OF X-RAY IRRADIATION UPON LIVER MITOCHONDRIA

Changes of mitochondria in the liver of mlce caused by whole-body x irradiation of 700 r were studied by the electron-microscope. Dilution and swelling of mitochondria was seen 30 min after irradiation, and disappearance of matrix and crista mitochondrialis l hr afterwards. Four hours after irradiation there was homogeneity of the matrix. A mixed picture of destruction and regeneration of mitochondria was observed 24 hr after irradiation. Changes of mitochondria caused by partial irradiation of the liver region were generally milder than in whole-body lrradiation with the same dose. This may indicate that indirect rather than direct action plays an important role in changes of mitochondria of the liver. (Abstr. Japan Med., I: No. I5,
