In rats receiving LD/sub 50/ doses of x irradiation, the sensitivity was generally high in young cells, next in normoblasts, then lymphocytes and granulocytes. It was low in monocytes and plasmocytes. The radiosensitivity of the fine structural cell components was highest in mitochondria followed by microsomes, external nuclear membrane, Golgi apparatus, and nucleus. Vacuole formation after x irradiation was observed in the cytoplasm or nuclear membrane or both. In the mitochondria, irregularity of the cristae, pyknosis, vacuole formation, deformation, and swelling were observed. In the Golgi bodies enlargement of the Golgi field and increase in number of vacuoles were observed. In the nucleus transparency due to nodulation of chromatin or pyknosis was observed. In the nuclei of myelocytes and metamyelocytes, nucleoli with stringshaped irregular boundary membranes appeared. in eosinophils the crystalline inner ends of the eosinophilic granules disappeared.
