STUDIES ON THE INFLUENCE OF A SMALL DOSAGE OF RADIATION UPON THE BLOOD. III. OBSERVATION OF PERIPHERAL LEUCOCYTES BY SUPRAVITAL STAINING IN X-RAY WORKERS

The peripheral blood of x-ray workers was examined by using supravital staining. The number of neutralred vacuoles and degenerated forms of neutrophils was increased. In the lymphocytes the average number of mitochondria was decreased, and neutral-red vacuoles and refractive neutral-red vacuoles were increased in number. In the blood picture there was slight lymphocytosis and the eosinophils tended to be slightly increased; there was no change in the erythrocyte count, hemoglobin content, color index, leukocyte count, and platelet count. It was concluded that the changes in the neutrophils and lymphocytes observed on supravital staining are useful indicators for the early hematologic diagnosis of radiation injury, especially of the chronic form.
