The determination of U and Th in geological locations is complicated by the scattering of the primary gamma -radiation of the rocks and requires an analysis of the gamma -spectra in a wide energy range. This problem was studied by measuring the spectra of infinite and semi-infinite U and Th strata having identical effective atomic numbers. A mixture of quartz and monazite concentrate with a Th/U ratio = 14 was used for the measurements. The possibility of determining the U and Th individually is dependent on the difference of the U equivalent in the Th at the energy range used. A high count rate is needed to ensure the required precision. For measurements below 1500 kev Pu/sup 239/ may be used as the reference source as it covers the whole hard radiation range. Best results were obtained in the ranges of 400 to 600 and 1100 to 1300 kev. The U equivalents of Th calculated energy ranges less than about 25 kev are practically independent of the dimensions of the Nal(Tl) crystal, the effective atomic number of the medium, and the thickness of the filters usually employed.
