By means of the experimental study of the gamma -ray spectra of a homogeneous radiating medium, the so-called infinite stratum,'' the conditions required for the quantitative determination of ores in their natural surrounding by means of gamma -ray spectral analysis may be established, resulting in improvements in gamma -logging and gamma -ray express analysis. Such studies were carried out with infinite and semiinfinite strata having effective atomic numbers ranging from 9 to 23. The spectra were obtained by using a NaI(Tl) scintillation spectrophotometer provided with a 100-channel pulse amplitude analyzer; the beta -radiation was completely filtered out by the 4-mm Al filter used. It was found that the apparatus gamma -spectrum of the infinite U ore strata is represented basically by pulses the amplitudes of which correspond to energies less than 400 kev. On the basis of differences in the effectiveness of recording the various gamma -ray quanta it is estimated that about 60 to 70% of the radiation of the infinite strata of U ores are in the range of soft rays.
