A spectrometric device, operating in the soft gamma radiation and x radiation range, made it possible to carry out measurements in the 5 to 200 kev range, in which the contribution of the elemerts at the beginning of the natural radioactive series is most important. A scintillation spectrometer, a spectrometer provided with lateral proportional counters, able to record radiations in the 5 to 40 kev range, and a multichannel analyzer were used for the measurements; the system had a resolution of 9% for the Cs/sup 137/ (E = 660 kev) lines. The radiation of U and Th separated radiochemically from equilibrium ores, was examined. The Th spectrum exhibited strong lines in the 10- to 20-kev range, correspondingto L/sub alpha 1/ -, L/sub BETA 1/-, and L/sub gamma /- (E =10.5 to 13 kev; E =1 to 16 kev, and E = 20 to 23 kev). The contributions of MsTh and Th + RaTh with the decay products were nearly identical. The results pointed to a strong interral conversion as shown also by absence of string lines in the 57 to 59 kev region. For studying U, an oxide preparation was examined. Beyond 50 kev, the gamma radiation of U/sup 235/ was the controlling one but in the 80 to 90 kev range the UX lines were most important. In the L range the U + UX spectrum was found similar to that of Th. A peak in the U + UX spectrum is due to RaB, Ra, and RaC. In the soft radiation range the spectrum of U in equilibrium is close to that of Ra, except in the 184-kev region. (TTT)
