SAFETY RELEASE MECHANISM

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4810335
A safety mechanism is described that releases a member from a parent member, in response to changes in pressure in a fluld in which the releasable member is immersed. This mechanism comprises a push rod attached to the releasable member that can trip a latch mechanism joining the releasable member to the parert member, while a pressure-sensitive device is located in the releasable member and forms an enclosed space therein. The pressure-sensitive device is responsive to pressure changes between the enclosed space and the fluid surrounding the member, and exerts a force on the push rod sufficient to trip the latch mechanism when a pre-determined pressure change occurs. Preferably the releasable member incorporates, in addition, means sensitive to temperature changes, so that changes in temperature between fluid surrounding this means and the enclosed space produce differential expansion between this means and the lower part of the releasable member, causing movement of the push rod to trip the latch mechanism. In a suitable embodiment the releasable member supports the safety rod of a reactor so that the tripping of the latch mechanism causes the shut-down of the reactor. (NPO)
