SAFETY RELEASE MECHANISM FOR NUCLEAR REACTORS

Patent ·
OSTI ID:4748899
A safety release mechanism is described which under certain faulty conditions in nuclear reactors causes the disengagement of a safety element (rod) from its holding device. The mechanism consists of a pressure or temperature sensitive device, which is connected rigidly with the safety element and which is responsive to pressure or temperature changes in the fluid in which the safety element is immersed. If a predetermined pressure or temperature change occurs, the sensitive device exerts a force on a system of push rods sufficient to trip a standard type latch mechanism which joins the element and the holding device. The sensitive device comprises a bellows connected to a piston forming an enclosed space. An orifice in the piston facilitates communication between the inside of the bellows and the surrounding fluid. The piston being in contact with the push rods, any extension of the bellows will cause the disengagement of the safety element. (Gmelin Institute)
