AN INVESTIGATION SEEKING COMMON AND EXTENSION WIRE FOR USE AT HIGH- TEMPERATURE WITH PT VS PT-10% RH THERMOCOUPLES

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4809340
An investigation was performed for the purpose of finding economical extension and/or common wire for use with Pt vs Pt-10% Rh thermocouples in the temperature range 800 to l,000 deg F. Both base-nmetal extension and common wire were found. The cost of the base-metal wire is of the order of 2 to 3% of the cost of Pt. The investigation treats differential temperatures at the point of connection, thcrmoelectric characteristics of various metals, circuitry, thermoelectric drift tests, properties other than thermoelectric, and points up the advantages and disadvantages of common as well as extension wire. Secondary treatment was given to connection temperatures in the range 300 to 400 deg F. (auth)
