THERMOELECTRIC STABILITY OF Pt-Rh THERMOCOUPLES. Milestone No. 1 Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4000257
Pt--Rh thermocouples were tested under continuous and temperature cycling conditions. Noble-metal-sheathed thermocouples were found to be mechanically reliable in the temperature range of 2500 to 2600 deg F for 542 hr snd to withstand 1,315 thermal cycles with thermal shock times of 40 sec through the 2500 to 1000 deg F range. However, the thermoelectric stability of sheathed thermocouples was poor due to volatilization of Rh and Pt. One configuration (Duax) shows promise of maintaining the required stability. (D.L.C.)
