AN ELECTRON MICROSCOPE STUDY ON THE HEALING OF A RAT LIVER AFTER LOCAL X- RAY IRRADIATION (in Russian)

White rats l60 to 180 grams in weight were given a single x-ray dose of 1000 r to the region of the liver. One week after irradiation, a wound 6 mm in diameter was made on the right side of the right lateral section of the liver. Rats operated on in the same way but not irradiated served as controls. Four days after the operation the rats were killed by decapitation, and the liver was fixed in a Zenker solution for histological treatment, and also in a buffered solution of osmium tetroxide at a pH of 7.2 for observation on a UEM-100 electron microscope. A description of the various cells found in the parenchyme of the liver is presented. An emigratioa of leucocytes to the damaged zone, and an intensification in the proliferation process was noted in the control rats on the 4th day after the operation. In the irradiated rats vacuoles were frequently detected in the cytoplasma, and also a large number of drops of fat which indicate fatty infiltration of the liver. The proliferation of tissue was much weaker. Damage to mitochondria near veins or arteries is frequently observed, and this damage is related to the tendency to bleed which is one of the common symptoms of radiation injury. (TTT)
