THE PERSISTENCE OF CHROMOSOMAL INJURIES IN SOMATIC CELLS OF RAT LIVER AFTER IRRADIATION WITH X-RAYS (in Russian)

White rats of both sexes were irradiated with a total x-ray dose of 92 r. The control group was not irradiated but was subjected to a hepatectomy. Series I was operated on 30 days after the irradiation and series II was operated on 24 days after irradiation. Series III was irradiated l0 to 20 minutes after the hepatectomy. Series IV was irradiated 6 hours after the hepatectomy. All the rats were killed by decapitation within 30 hours after the operation. A liver seetion was fixed with Zenker's solution, and the chromosomal aberrations were counted. The number of damaged cells was found to be about 22% in each case. The number of chromosomal aberrations did not vary for a period of 1 to 30 days after the irradiation. It is possible that this persistence of non-lethal damaged chromosomes in the irradiated cells can lead to the occurrence of cancerous growths. (TTT)
